Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We have compiled below the most frequently asked questions about registering a .JOBS domain name:

1. Why should my organization register a .JOBS domain?

Registering a .JOBS domain name is a requirement to have a .JOBS website on the Internet.
Over 300 million job seekers each year use .JOBS websites to find jobs.
Every day Google indexes over 20 million pages of .JOBS websites made searchable to job seekers. Over 100 million job seekers start their job search from Google each month.
Having a .JOBS website makes your organization part of this employment eco-system on the Internet immediately.  Registering a .JOBS domain name is the first step.

2. What is a .JOBS website?

People know a .JOBS website by its web address that ends in .JOBS (also known as a URL).  For example:
www.att.com is known as a .COM website (“www.att.com” is the web address)
www.att.jobs is known as a .JOBS website (“www.att.jobs” is the web address)
The first step to having a .JOBS web address is registering a .JOBS domain name.

3. How much does it cost to register a .JOBS domain name?

.JOBS domain names can be registered at Go Daddy for approximately $140 per year. Some registrars may charge a little more and also bundle some additional services with the registration (such as hosting, email forwarding and/or URL forwarding).  The .JOBS MSRP (the retail price we suggest to registrars) for just the .JOBS domain name registration is $150 per year.

4. Who are the registrars that sell .JOBS domain names?

No. Like .COM, we are required to use domain name registrars, such as Go Daddy, for the registration of .JOBS domain names. All .JOBS registrars are credible to use for this purpose.

10. Do I have to be a member of SHRM to register a .JOBS domain name?

No.

11. Do I have to be in the “HR Department” to register a .JOBS domain name?

No. A person in the IT department, legal department, business owner, CEO, marketing person or an independent agent are examples of who may apply to register a .JOBS domain name.  The basic requirement of any person is to be supportive of the SHRM Code of Ethics (See also FAQ’s 8 & 9).

12. How am I allowed to use my .JOBS domain name registration?

In any way that serves the needs of the human resource management community (such as for recruitment).
.JOBS domain names are generally used for websites, email, hosting, apps, advertising, as a URL re-direct (or “URL  forwarding”) etc.

13. What is the best way to use a .JOBS domain name?

The best way is to make your .JOBS domain name function as a website on the Internet (such as www.amazon.jobs and www.att.jobs).  Search engines such as Google will then index it for job seekers to find (see also FAQ #1).

14. I’ve registered a .JOBS domain name but use it as a URL re-direct to my company’s .COM “careers” page. Is this ok?

Yes, it’s ok.
Some very large companies such as Geico, Walgreens, Google and Apple use their .JOBS domain name on the Internet this way. Recruiters frequently use this approach to make their marketing collateral more effective to job seekers (see examples).

15. I want to charge fees at my .JOBS website (such as for companies to list their jobs or for access to a candidate database). Am I allowed to operate a .JOBS website for commercial purposes?

Of course.

16. Any commercial purpose?

Yes. So long it is legal, non-harmful, generally involves recruitment or employment, you’re good to go.

17. I’ve read somewhere that I can’t use my .JOBS website as a “job board” (I can only list my own company’s jobs) – is this true?

No, it is false. Real examples include NewYork.jobs, Landing.jobs, Doherty.jobs, Selectemp.jobs, NativeAmerican.jobs, Semo.jobs, Riverway.jobs, Find.jobs to name a few.  See also FAQ’s 15 & 16.

18. We’re a staffing agency. Can we register .JOBS domain names for our websites?

Of course. Real examples include Provisional.jobs, Honeycomb.jobs, Pinpoint.jobs, OnDemandStaffing.jobs, Jits.jobs, Instaff.jobs, Sundus.jobs, Pinnacle.jobs to name a few.  See also FAQ’s 15 &16.

19. How long does it take to process an application to register a .JOBS domain name?

We receive applications from registrars immediately through our automated back-end system. At this stage, the domain name is in “pending” status (i.e. is “pending” our approval).
Applications for names representing a “company name”, a brand name or product name are generally approved same business day for use on the Internet. The verification URL provided in your application with your registrar (such as your company home page URL) serves an important purpose for us in this regard.

20. I applied to register a .JOBS domain name through a registrar and they are saying it is still not approved in your system. What is the problem and what can I do?

There can be different causes for this. Usually this is because the information provided in the application is not complete or sufficient for us to make a positive verification. This is particularly the case if we are unable to determine the name being requested is a company name, product name or brand name of the applicant organization (i.e. a name by which the applicant is “commonly known” as).

21. How long does an application for a .JOBS domain name stay in your system for review?

After 30 days the application will automatically be removed from our system. You may email support (at) goto.jobs to inquire status of your application and/or provide us additional information (please include the domain name you are seeking in the subject line).

22. I want to register a very generic name in .JOBS (such as a location, industry, occupation or  common dictionary term) that is not my company name, brand name or a product name of my business. Is this possible?

Yes.
We have an online submission form that enables you to contact us directly. For this type of request we encourage you to use this process prior to applying for the domain name through a .JOBS registrar.

23. Once I have registered a .JOBS domain name, do I have to make it work on the Internet?

The expectation is that it will work. The vast majority of .JOBS domain names work on the Internet (primarily as a website, for email or as a URL re-direct for marketing). There is little to no value in registering a .JOBS domain name and then not making it work.

24. If I sell or transfer my .JOBS domain name in the future to a different party, do you have to approve this? Is there a “re-verification” process at the time of domain name sale or transfer?

No.
There is no practical need because the requirement to be supportive of the SHRM Code of Ethics transfers to the new party (is a requirement contained in the .JOBS registration agreement).

25. Am I allowed to sell my .JOBS domain name in the future to a different party at any price I want?

Of course.

26. I registered a .JOBS domain name and now I want to list it for sale in the domain name aftermarket, is this allowed?

Yes.

27. Someone has registered my trademark as a domain name in .JOBS. Will you take it back for me?

No.
.JOBS is required to follow the independently operated Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) for domain names, same as .COM.
